Write your MLA today to ask them to protect Nova Scotia patients
The Nova Scotia medical regulator requires doctors to offer euthanasia/assisted suicide (MAiD) to their patients, even before they ask. Physicians must also participate in MAiD against their moral and ethical convictions.
Why is this a problem?
- When a doctor suggests MAiD to a patient, especially without being asked, it can send an unintended message that the patient's life is not valued or worthwhile.
- In March 2027, a federal law will come into effect, making MAiD available to patients with mental illnesses. Psychiatrists will be obligated to offer MAiD as a therapeutic option.
- 42 physicians from across Nova Scotia have said they can not follow this policy. They believe it will damage the trust at the heart of the doctor-patient relationship.
- These doctors fear disciplinary action and loss of their license for acting in their patients’ best interests. This policy threatens Nova Scotia's ability to recruit and retain new doctors.
