Sam's Story

Living with Mental Illness

Canadians living with mental illness deserve options that help them live.

Sam is a young professional from a small town in Ontario with a keen interest in politics, sports, and the outdoors. During his youth, he struggled with major depression and anxiety. In 2021, Sam attempted to take his own life. The following day, 12 hours after he was admitted to the hospital, he was released, and a nurse handed him a bus pass to get home.

Sam describes the inconsistencies in access to mental health services across the country. Sam is frightened by discussions surrounding federal legislation that would allow people who suffer solely from mental illness to access MAiD. He feels that we should focus on improving mental health care in Canada before offering MAiD to people with mental illness.

Sam now works in Ottawa pursuing his dream in politics and assists others suffering with mental illness through his volunteer work with SickNotWeak, an online mental health support community created by former sports show host, Michael Landsberg.
